Pica
is a very sweet, cute little mare. She has been owned by the same
young lady for several years. Due to some unfortunate family situations,
she now needs to find Pica a new home.
She is a friendly, laid-back horse. Pica has
been ridden in the arena and on trails. She is not spooky and has
always walked through anything you point her at. I've used her periodically
for riding lessons and pony rides. However, she is not suitable
for a total beginner. She will throw her head constantly if she
hasn't been ridden in a while and she needs a patient rider to just
work her through it. The more often she is ridden, the less she
does this. She has no physical problems that cause this - it's all
behavioral. We ride her in a Dr. Cook's bitless bridle. Transitioning
her from the bit to the bitless bridle helped the head tossing dramatically.
Pica is very healthy and her feet are in good
shape. But she will founder on a grassy pasture in the spring/summer.
She has been barefoot for years and has no problems as long as her
diet is properly managed and she gets regular trims.
She wasn't treated well at her previous home
before her current owner got her. She has done very well with clicker
training and was able to learn that people aren't so bad. Her young
owner has done a great job with her and we want to make sure that
her next owner doesn't undo any of that. If you are looking for
a horse to ride on a regular basis, then Pica would be a great match
for you!
Pica has a smooth trot (although she paddles
at the trot) and has been ridden bareback, English, and Western.
She's easy to catch and handle and stands nicely for all ground
handling. She is around 13.3 - 14 hands and will need a smaller
rider.
