Sadly, Red passed away in 2010. It was very sudden
and unexpected, but he also went peacefully. He was very old and
still quite healthy. We are lucky to have had to the privilege of
knowing a horse like Red. Everyone adored him, and he is missed
by many.
Red
was a grade gelding, well into his 30s, who came from a local trail
riding facility. He was there for over 20 years when it was decided
he was too old to be used and should go to auction. Thankfully that
never happened, and he came here instead.
Red was a resident favorite as he taught many
children to ride. In spite of his advanced age, he found a new calling
as a part-time lesson horse and proudly worked on Saturdays for
6 years, teaching children to ride. He had a super personality and
loved people. He was also a lead horse in the herd, and was always
kind to the other horses. He frequently adopted youngsters in the
herd, taking them under his wing to protect them from bullying by
the other horses. He was a gentle spirit and sweet in every way.
Red always wanted to have a job and would become
noticeably depressed whenever we offered him retirement as a full-time
pet. In addition to his work, he also maintained at least two girlfriends
in the herd at all times :-)
The 2009 Dalton, GA phone book featured my photo
of Red and Bellamy on the cover (pictured below!)
